Joan Marie Stewart - Obituary

J

oan Marie Stewart (nee Bowman), a longtime resident of Glenn Dale, MD, passed away at Gilchrist Center Howard County in Columbia, MD, on May 20, 2024, from normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Born September 1, 1941, in Beltsville, MD, to the late Marie and Odell Bowman, she held numerous jobs in her lifetime, but her work with her husband in the construction field defined the majority of her years. A true lover of animals, she found great joy in the company of her horses, dogs, cats, and other non-traditional pets. Joan enjoyed the thrill of visiting casinos and dancing. She was an avid member of the American Legion, Post 217 in College Park. Joan is survived by three sons, Jack W. (Juliet) Stewart, David M. (Mary) Stewart, and Michael A. Stewart; two sisters, Connie Gainey and Peggy (Jimmy) Gainey; ten grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, and her many friends. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, George A. Stewart; her companion of 20 years, William E. Knupp; and a brother-in-law, Billy Gainey. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of Joan. Her absence will be deeply felt, and her memory will forever be etched in our hearts. May our memories of her be eternal. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joan's life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD, on Sunday, June 9, 2024, from 10 am until her memorial service begins at 11 am. She will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery next to the love of her life, George, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, 1815 Bay Ridge Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403, or Gilcrest Center, 11311 McCormick Road, Suite 350, Hunt Valley, Maryland 21031.
