Joann Hanson - Obituary

oann Gager Hanson, “Jody” a 2 yr. resident of Edgewater and previously of Lanham, MD, died on Wednesday February 18, 2009 at her daughter's residence after a 1 year battle with cancer. Born March 30, 1930, in Patterson, NJ, she attended Ramsey High School in Ramsey, New Jersey (the town is actually named after her ancestors), where she was the head majorette. She also graduated from Penn State University with a B.A degree in Home Economics. Jody was also a runner up for Miss Penn State in 1953, and a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Jody worked as a teacher for the P.G. County Public School System, where she had a great desire to help her at risk students strive to graduate and succeed in life. She loved gardening, needlepoint, spending time with her grandchildren, antiques and refinishing antique furniture. Jody is survived by her sons, Richard E. Hanson, Jr. of Abingdon, MD, John W. Hanson of Germantown, MD and her daughter Tammy H. Page of Edgewater, MD, her brother Stephen Terhune of Bowie, MD and her twin sister Virginia “Ginny” Bruton of Bowie, MD. Also survived by her 7 grandchildren Sara Jean, Richard E., III, Robert E., Brittney N and Chrissie E. Hanson, Natalie B. H. and Chuckie D. Page, Jr. Friends are invited to Jody's Life Celebration on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. A viewing will be held on Monday from 9:30am until time of service at 11am at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship, 337 W. Central Ave. Davidsonville, MD. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
