J

oel Vernick, 98, a resident of Annapolis, MD for five years and formerly of Garrett Park, MD for fifty-five years, died on Sunday, June 19 at the Atria Manresa retirement community in Annapolis. Born on June 30, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Jack and Anna Vernick, Joel served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he earned a Master’s Degree in social work and began a lengthy career as a child psychologist at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD. Joel also worked in the antique clock field. He repaired clocks for the State Department, the White House and thousands of others. In addition to his parents, Joel was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Joan D. Vernick. He is survived by his sons, Kenneth Vernick of Paris, France, Andrew Vernick of Arnold, MD and Lee Vernick of Portland, OR; and his grandchildren, Christopher, Justin, Noah, Meaghan, Gillian, Marina and Paloma. Interment, with military honors, will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Condolences may be made by using the Memories tab on this page.
