John A. Buchanan - Obituary

John Austin Buchanan, 76, of Annapolis and previously of Upper Marlboro and Dunkirk, MD, passed away on September 23, 2016. Born on November 14, 1939 in Moscow, ID to the late Jesse and Leah Buchanan, John’s family moved to Maryland when he was 14. John was a 1957 graduate of Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 from Washington College in Chestertown, MD and completed his education in 1964 at the American University Law School in Washington, DC where he received his law degree. John specialized in insurance defense litigation before becoming the Charles County Assistant County Attorney. In his retirement, John worked as a bailiff for Anne Arundel County’s Circuit Court. He was a member of the Maryland Bar Association for more than 50 years and a Maryland Bar Foundation Fellow since 1985. John enjoyed being an active member of the Kiwanis International. He was an animal lover, history buff and ham radio operator. His greatest passion though was spending time with his family and friends. John is survived by his two children, John Barnett “Barney” (Trish) Buchanan, Lara (Michael Goldfaden) Buchanan, both of Annapolis, and their mother, Teresa Buchanan; current wife, Suzanne Tilton; one sister, Nancy Rees of Hayden, ID; four grandchildren, Abby, Owen, Anna and Alec; one niece and nephew and many other friends and family. Friends are invited to celebrate John’s life with his family from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 2 at the Kiwanis of Mayo, 1133 Carrs Wharf Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. Given John’s love for animals, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in John’s name to your local SPCA.
