J

ohn W. Butler, Sr., 88, a 68-year resident of Annapolis, died October 18, 2013 at the Mandrin Inpatient Care Center in Harwood. Born on May 29, 1925 in Chesterfield, SC, John was one of eight children born to the late Fred and Dora Butler. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and then worked as an HVAC technician for the former Annapolis Utilities and Hardesty and Monroe Companies. John enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, wildlife and feeding and caring for animals. He was especially fond of the time he spent with his grandchildren and his cat, Sabrina. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Alice; three sons, John W. (Cathy) Butler, Jr. of Edgewater, James Michael (Teresa) Butler of Columbia and Richard David Butler of Annapolis; daughter, Gwenda Lynn (David) Butler of Amarillo, TX; eight grandchildren, John III, Ryan, Jeffrey, Daniel, Christopher, James, Jennifer and Laura; and five great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to John’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater where his funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23. Private interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake’s Mandrin Inpatient Care Center, 3675 Solomons Island Road, Harwood, MD 20776.
