John Gates - Obituary

ohn Harold Gates, age 61, a resident of Annapolis, MD, died on Wednesday July 7, 2010, at his residence after a short battle with cancer. Born on July 10, 1948, in Buffalo, NY, John graduated from the University of Buffalo with a B.A., a M.A., and then a PhD in economics. John served in the US Army from 1969 to 1971 and for 30 years for the Federal Government in the Department of Commerce, both in the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Census Bureau. He also was a volunteer fireman in Crofton, MD and enjoyed woodworking, reading and spending time with his family and friends. His daughter remembers him as thoughtful, interesting, and loyal – a loving father with a very kind heart. His love and deep friendship with family and friends created cherished memories. John is survived by his daughter, Michele Gates of Alexandria, VA; his brothers, Joseph Gates of Monroe, NC, Patrick Gates of Sanborn, NY and Peter Gates of Lockport, NY and his sister, Judy Wendler of Raleigh, NC. Friends are invited to John's Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Monday, July 12 from 1:00pm until the funeral service begins at 2:00pm. Interment private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The SPCA of Anne Arundel Co. in memory of John Gates, 1815 Bay Ridge Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403.
