ohn Clifford “JC or Chick” Howerton, age 88, died at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis MD on Saturday, April 11, 2015.
Born June 11, 1926, in Crittenden County, Kentucky to Ora Carrick and John Cain Howerton, he received a degree in political science from the University of Kentucky using his G.I. Bill after returning from service in the Navy during World War II. He piloted a Landing Ship Tank (LST) to support amphibious operations in the Japanese theatre.
He worked as a public servant for the United States Government for 33 years. He worked for the National Archives, the Government Services Administration, and the Federal Aviation Administration where he served as an executive for foreign affairs. In retirement, he was a real estate agent and volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
John loved to travel! He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, crabbing, and gardening. He was an avid Redskins and UK basketball fan. He loved to write poetry and has authored a self-published book entitled, Remembering.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Velora Cordua Howerton of Annapolis, Maryland, and his children from his first marriage, Janet Celeste Horst of Woodbine, Maryland and Lillie Denise Hollidge of Bowie, Maryland. He is also survived by his step daughter, Joyce Pope of Fulton, Maryland and step son, Russell Cordua, Jr., of Annapolis, Maryland, 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A service will be held at 12 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. Friends are welcome for a time of visitation with the family at 11 am with the service following at 12 noon. The interment will be private.
