John Carleton Lingebach, Jr. - Obituary

t is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of John Carleton Lingebach, Jr., affectionately known as “Jack”, on August 11, 2026. Born on March 10, 1939 in Washington D.C., Jack was a dedicated tradesperson whose passion for craftsmanship and community touched the lives of many. Born into a family that valued hard work and creativity, Jack enjoyed meticulously working on his beloved retreat cabin in West Virginia. He took immense pride in building projects alongside his father, affectionately known as “Pop-Pop,” around their farm and in Epping Forest. Jack’s creative spirit led him to construct a variety of structures, including cabins and boats. Notably, he named one boat after his mother, the “Dottie L”, and later took on a new hobby with a retired race boat, the JS-39. He always loved rebuilding and tinkering with antique pinball machines and Ford Econoline Vans, carrying this passion until his final moments. Jack cherished the time spent with friends at the community clubhouse, reminiscing about cherished memories. You could often find him at the beach, enjoying the company of friends and savoring a cold adult beverage. Professionally, Jack had successful careers with Xerox Corporation and the National Cash Register Company, where he showcased his remarkable ability to fix, replace, and repair anything. This talent extended to all aspects of his life, as he was known for his ingenuity in creating solutions, even when parts were not readily available. Later in life, Jack dedicated himself to ensuring that his family could enjoy the wonderful amenities he and his immediate family had created for the grandchildren, niece, and nephews. He hoped they would cherish the stunning views from the front porch in West Virginia and create memories in the boathouse in Epping Forest, reminiscent of his own childhood. Jack is survived by his loving family, including his sister Pat Hofmann, niece Connie McClaeb (Tim), nephews Gery Hofmann (Olga) and John Hofmann, and many additional family members who will carry forward his legacy of creativity. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, John Carleton and Dorothy Edith Lingebach whose influence shaped his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Queen Anne’s County Office of the Sheriff Scholarship Fund at 505 Railroad Ave, Centreville, MD 21617, or to Hospice of the Chesapeake. Jack will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jak’s life on Monday, August 17 from 10:30 am until his funeral service begins at 12 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis.
