John Maiers - Obituary

ohn Sigmond Maiers, Jr., a 6-year resident of Newnan, Georgia and previously of Annapolis, MD died on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at the Benton House Assisted Living in Newnan, GA. Born November 1, 1921 in Sugar Notch, PA he graduated from George Washington University with a B.S degree in Business. John served his country in the US Coast Guard and received the good conduct medal. After his military career he worked as a contract specialist for the Dept. of Defense. During the 1960's he owned and operated a sporting goods store. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 40 years, and served as a field office treasurer. His interests included basketball, Notre Dame football and the stock market. John was predeceased by his wife Geraldine Maiers, who died in 2004. He is survived by his children, John "Jake" Maiers of California, MD and Loretta "Lori" Goldsmith of Newnan, GA; his sisters, Claire Kaepuk of Cherry Hill, NJ and Mary Kratz of Sugar Notch, PA. Also survived by his grandson Sean E. Endler and one great-grandchild. Friends are invited to John's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Tuesday, February 22, from 5 to 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, February 23, at 9:00am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD. Entombment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Assoc., 1850 York Rd., Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093 or to Alley Animals, 2 Greenbrier Rd., Towson, MD 21286.
