J

ohn Charles Newgent, 72, a resident of Davidsonville for 40 years, died of complications from cancer Aug. 10 at the Chester River Medical Center after a seven-month illness. Known as "Buddy" or "Chuck," Mr. Newgent was born July 9, 1935, in Washington, D.C., where he graduated from Suitland High School. Mr. Newgent served in the Navy as an electronic technician aboard the USS Coral Sea. He retired from Litton Amecon in College Park, where worked as an engineering program manager for 38 years. An active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, he served on the building and maintenance committees, and as an usher. His interests included travel, camping, woodworking, yardwork and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. Surviving are his wife, Patricia A. Newgent, whom he married in January 1964; four sons, Greg and Charles Newgent, both of Chester, and Brian and Kevin Newgent, both of Centreville; two daughters, Paula Johnson of Littleton, Colo., and Teresa Martin of Falls Church, Va.; three brothers, Barry Newgent of Davidsonville, Billy Newgent of Jupiter, Fla., and Andrew Newgent of Brooms Island, Md.; one sister, Doris Barbour of Golden Beach, Md.; and eight grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Janet Layton. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 Central Ave. in Davidsonville. Burial will follow in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.
