ohn D. “Grampy” Yates, 76, passed away on July 7, 2017. He was a 4-year resident of Gambrills and previously a 42-year resident of the Loch Haven community in Edgewater, MD. Born on June 28, 1941 in Washington, DC to the late William and Virginia Yates, John served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962 as a gunner’s mate aboard the U.S.S. Alcor (AK-259). After his receiving an honorable discharge, John pursued a career as an electrician and estimator at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and later as an estimator for Power Solutions.
John was a member of the American Legion in Mayo and the Calvert County Sportsman’s Club. An avid hunter, he took annual hunting trips for 50 years to Broomes Island, MD. He also enjoyed fishing at Lake Idlewild, PA and playing golf. His greatest passion though was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Bekkala. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Maureen O’Neill Yates, three daughters, Mary Lynn (Thomas) Inscoe of Crownsville, MD, Jennifer Anne (David) McCabe of Finksburg, MD and Maureen Alyce (Stephen) Keating of Edgewater; one brother, William B. Yates of Birmingham, AL; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to celebrate John’s life from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12 at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Avenue South, Millersville, MD. Burial will follow.
