n Sunday, May 17, 2009, Joseph Anthony Freda, age 91, a 50-year resident of Edgewater, MD, died at his residence of natural causes. Joseph was born in Massachusetts on January 27, 1918 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps with the 1st Marine Division as a machine gunner during WWII. He fought at Guadalcanal. After the service Mr. Freda worked at the Statler Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC from 1946 until his retirement in 1975. After retiring from the hotel business, he owned and operated several local small businesses, among them were the Happy Pedaler bicycle shop and the Lawnmower Man repair shop, both in Annapolis. Joseph was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Annapolis Lodge 296. As a member of the Moose he attained the Pilgrim Degree and he also instituted a Moose Lodge in Deale, MD. His hobbies were working and watching T.V. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mae Freda of Edgewater, whom he married on August 14, 1948; one son, Michael Anthony Freda of Annapolis; two daughters, Paula Given of Annapolis and Therese M. Freda of Davidsonville; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, William Joseph Freda and Matthew John Freda. Friends are invited to Joseph's Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Rd. Edgewater, MD on Thursday, May 21, from 6:00PM until his funeral service begins at 7:30PM. Interment Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
