J

oseph Francis Kump "Joe", 84, a resident of Annapolis, MD for 27 years and previously of Damascus, MD, Huntingdon Valley, PA and Hockessin, DE, died on Wednesday, January 16 at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, MD after a brief illness. Joe was born on January 13, 1935 in Chambersburg, PA to the late Robert John and Ruth Kimpel Kump. Joe served in the U.S. Army and then, with the help of the GI Bill, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Shippensburg University and a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University. He then began a lifelong career with the Internal Revenue Service in Gary, IN as a Special Agent and then moved on to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA and Wilmington, DE. He ended his career with the IRS back in the Washington, DC office while living in Annapolis. Joe was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis. He enjoyed writing poetry, vacationing with his family in Bethany Beach, spending time with his grandchildren and watching old movies while eating ice cream. Joe is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris Shreiner Kump; his children, Gregory Ray Kump of Beckley, WV and Lisa Kump Braden of Charlottesville, VA; his brothers, James Kump of Warren, MI and T. Edward Kump of Chambersburg, PA and his grandchildren, Robert III, Rachel and Christopher Braden of Charlottesville, VA, Haleigh and Peter Kump of Ellicott City, MD and Mason Kump of Beckley, WV. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Joseph Kump; his siblings, Richard Kump, Patsy Kump Zimmerman and Doris Kump Myers and a step-grandson, David Brown. Friends are invited to celebrate Joe's life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Sunday, January 27 with a family visitation beginning at 1 pm. The funeral service will begin at 2 pm and will be followed by a short reception. Interment, with military honors, will take place at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd., Crownsville, MD on Monday, January 28 at 10:45 am.
