J

oseph “Joe, PopPop” Barry Sims, 63, a 12-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Bowie and Hyattsville, died on Monday, May 18, 2020, in Bowie, MD of pancreatic cancer following a 5-month battle. Born September 21, 1956, in Washington DC, he was the owner of Joseph Sims Painting & Drywall. Joe served his country, as a PFC, in the U.S. Army. He was a member of a 12-step recovery program and was dedicated to helping newcomers through service work and sharing his experience, strength, and hope. Joe enjoyed riding and customizing his motorcycles, collecting body art, sharing his passion for the blues with his friends. He also enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Joe loved his rescue dogs, Popeye, Maizy, Molly, and the many who came before them. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary John. Joe is survived by his wife of 22-years, Joyce Catherine; two children, Sara Jo of Annapolis, MD and Chanse Michael of Hampden, MD; three sisters, Linda Jean of Gaithersburg, MD, Pamela Joan of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Susan Patricia of Bowie, MD; and two grandchildren, Morgan “Momo” Goforth and Codi Marie. A Celebration of Joe’s Life will be held when the pandemic restrictions are lifted.
