Joseph Latimer Tippett - Obituary

oseph “Joe” L. Tippett, Jr., 79, an 11-year resident of Edgewater, MD and previously of Silver Spring, MD died suddenly on September 1, 2009 of a cerebral hemorrhage in Ocean City, MD. Born November 18, 1929 in Washington, D.C., he graduated from McKinley Technology High School in Washington, D.C. He was employed for 45 years with Bell Atlantic as a staff manager in the traffic engineering division until retirement in 1989. He was president of the Blue Water East Condo Association in Ocean City, MD, a 20-year member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and volunteered with the workshop for the blind and handicapped. Mr. Tippett was an active member and volunteer at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater and was a member and warden of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1384. His hobbies included model making, collecting model trains, electronics, being a handyman/ “Mr. Fix it”, spending time in Ocean City, MD and travelling with his loving wife of 59 years. He is survived by his wife, Jean Tippett, whom he married on September 16, 1950; two sons, Joseph (Jay) L. Tippett, III of Potomac Falls, VA and Gerard (Jerry) K. Tippett of North Laurel, MD; two daughters Jody Franklin of Columbia, MD and Janice Tippett of Edgewater, MD; 2 brothers and 4 sisters; he is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his daughter, Mary Joyce (Joy) Gerkens. Friends are invited to Joe's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Thursday, September 3 from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, September 4 at 11am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater, MD. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
