Joy Hughes - Obituary

oy Hughes died August 20, 2026, at age 89. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from Langley High School. After graduating, she worked in the corporate trust department at Union National Bank until she moved to Annapolis, MD, in 1959. She married Thomas Hughes in 1958. They were married for 68 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bridge, attending Bible studies, and doing jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles. She especially loved and cherished her grandchildren. After her children were grown, she worked at Montgomery Ward until the store closed. She was a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis. She also was a member of the auxiliary of the Gideons International. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children: Thomas Ill of the home address, Janet Burt of Timonium, MD, Carol Matthews of Clearwater, FL, Steven of Eureka, MT; seven grandchildren; Erin, Zoe, Paul, Austin, Andrew, Ryan and Benjamin; two sons-in-law, David Burt and Paul Matthews; two great grandchildren, Greyson Matthews and Elias Stewart. She is predeceased by her parents, Mary and Blaine Rush; her sisters, Jean McMinn and Helen Schaub; and her great-grandson, Stetson Matthews. Friends are invited to celebrate Joy’s life on Friday, August 28 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 11 am at Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 710 Ridgely Ave., Annapolis, MD. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
