Joyce McKenna - Obituary

oyce Marie McKenna, 81, a resident of Bowie and formerly of Odenton, MD, passed away on November 10, 2017, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Born on August 2, 1936, in Boston, MA to the late Frederick and Mary Rita Hendsbee, Joyce devoted her life to being a loving wife and mother to her husband and their six children, nurturing them as they pursued their own dreams. She enjoyed painting, gardening, and the beach. Her passion though was family gatherings, especially as they expanded over the years to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her, “Nana.” In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Daniel F. McKenna. She is survived by four sons, Daniel (Amy) McKenna of Manomet Beach, MA, Michael McKenna of Bowie, MD, David (Kathleen) McKenna of Annapolis, MD and Marc (Maria) McKenna of Stevesnville, MD; two daughters, Ann Marie McKenna and Maura (Kevin) Moorefield, both of Bowie, MD; one brother, Richard Hendsbee of Seattle, WA and one sister, Joan Tracy of Odenton, MD; seven grandsons, Rory Haggard of Raleigh, NC, Matthew Moorefield of Edgewater, MD, Spencer McKenna of Alexandria, VA, Finn McKenna of Stevensville, Daniel McKenna of Waldorf, MD, Ryan McKenna of North Beach, MD and Declan McKenna of Manomet Beach; six granddaughters, Sarah Kraft of Edgewater, Julie McKenna of Burlington, VT, Megan Watson of Upper Marlboro, MD, Claire McKenna of Stevensville, Ellie McKenna of Baltimore, MD and Sophie of McKenna of Manomet Beach; and six great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to join Joyce’s family at a memorial gathering on Saturday, November 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1850 York Road, Ste.
