I

t is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Louise O’Brien DeGrasse Teague Nurin “Nanny” at the age of 86. A fifty-six year resident of Mayo, MD, Joyce passed away peacefully at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center, in Annapolis on October 15, 2023 with her beloved husband, children and granddaughter by her side. Born on August 18, 1937 at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC to the late Helen Louise Berry and Robert Vincent O’Brien, Joyce had two half sisters and three half brothers. She grew up around Washington and had fond memories of roller skating down Pennsylvania Avenue as a child. In 1967 Joyce moved her family to Mayo and in 1980 Joyce and her then husband, George Anthony DeGrasse Sr. opened GAD Plumbing, Heating and Home Improvement Inc. She was very proud to be a business owner and the company is still in business today. Joyce enjoyed life and loved traveling the world with her husband, Larry. She loved her family and took great pride in her home on the water, which became the family gathering place where she hosted many parties and holidays. In her later years, one of her greatest joys was watching her grand children and great children fish, crab, swim and swing from her big oak tree. She had a love for dogs and had many throughout the years most recently her Prince Charles Cavalier named Buffy. Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Lawrence Nurin, D.D.S.; her children, Donna Elizabeth (Sam) McCoy, of Mayo and George Anthony ”Charlie” (Patty) DeGrasse, Jr. of Tracy’s Landing, MD; her 7 grandchildren, Melissa (David) Morris, George (Morgan) DeGrasse, III, Sam McCoy, Jr., Lauren (Rick) Raynor, Bradley DeGrasse, Melanie (Brandon) McCoy and Dana (Dave) Johnson and her 14 great-grandchildren, Hannah Paddy, David, Delaney and Delilah Morris, Riley Moreland, Carson DeGrasse, Nicole, Maddison, Wesley and Liam Johnson, Charlee and Juliet Raynor and Linnaea and Viviana DeGrasse. Family and friends are invited to attend Joyce’s memorial service on Tuesday, October, 24th at 11:30 am at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mayo United Methodist Church, 1005 Turkey Point Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, ATTN: Backpack Buddies.
