J

oyce Hurt Webster, 78, of Edgewater and previously of LaPlata, MD, passed away on March 2, 2018, after a battle with cancer. Born in Los Angeles, CA on June 9, 1939, to the late Arthur and Jane Hurt, Joyce trained to be a registered nurse at the Washington Hospital Center in DC where she specialized in private duty and medical services. She would ultimately settle into a position as a Public Health Nurse in Prince George's County specializing in the care of children. Joyce served her community in many ways. She was a Eucharist minister and lector at her church as well as a volunteer and organizer of the church bazaar. A recovering alcoholic for 43 years, Joyce was passionate about helping hundreds of other people seeking sobriety. She also enjoyed caring for and being around animals of all kinds. Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband of 33 years, Dayton M. Webster. She is survived by her children, Penny (John) Wardell of Edgewater and John (Lisa) Webster of Huntingtown, MD; her stepson, Ronald S. Palmer of Edgewater; two brothers, Morton Hurt of Idaho and Arthur Hurt of California; one sister, Judy Hurt also of California; five grandchildren, Caitlin (Joyce) and Haile Kellagher, Bo Wardell and Mason (Kristina) and Mathew Webster; and one great-granddaughter, Paisleigh Webster. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald L. Palmer. Friends are invited to celebrate Joyce's life with her family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Friday, March 9 at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM on Saturday, March 10 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Rd., Edgewater, MD. Interment will be at 1 PM on Tuesday, March 20 at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD.
