Kathleen A, McCoy - Obituary

athleen A. McCoy (Kathy), 77 of Shady Side, MD, passed away on May 23, 2026, after her battle with Lung Cancer. Kathy was born on September 26, 1948, to George and Dorothy Clayton in Washington, DC. After Kathy graduated from Northwestern High School in 1966, she started her first and only job at the Department of Justice in Washington, DC, where she retired after 37 years. In 1968, Kathy married the love of her life, John (Luke) McCoy. Soon after, they moved to Shady Side, where they went on to raise 3 children: Becky McCoy of Alpine, CA, John McCoy of Shady Side, MD, and Melissa McCoy of Evans, GA. After retiring in 2005, Kathy spent her time attending luncheons with her friends and grandchildren, watching football, celebrating holidays and other special occasions with her family, and enjoying the companionship of the Our Lady of Sorrow Lady’s Guild. Kathy was predeceased by her parents, George and Dorothy Clayton, husband Luke McCoy, brothers George Clayton Jr. and John Burns, sister-in-law Alice (Jane) Rushe, and niece Rebecca Greco. She is survived by her children Becky McCoy (Craig), John McCoy (Tylene), and Melissa McCoy (Justin), her grandchildren Alexa McCoy, Austin McCoy, Hailey McCoy, Luke McCoy, and Chloe Tupik and her great-grand son Kaleb Gomez-McCoy, her sisters Haven (Cookie) Mincey, Tracy VanLeeuwen (Karl), brother Edward Campbell and sister-in-law Kathy Keffer (Paul), her nieces Tammy Clayton, Dawn Oler, Crystal Sellmeyer, and Jennifer Heffelfinger and nephews Franklin Rushe, Eric VanLeeuwen and Christopher Keffer; Family and friends are invited to celebrate Kathy’s life on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10 am until 11 am at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Rd., West River, MD 20778, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 am. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Rd., West River, MD 20778
