athleen “Kathy” Louise Woelfel (née Meench), a long-time resident of Annapolis, MD, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on May 19, 2023. She was born on November 28, 1938, in Somers Point, NJ to the late Doris & Frederick Meench. Kathy moved to Annapolis, MD during her young years, graduated from Annapolis High School in 1956, and married George “Bucky” Woelfel in 1957. Together they had 6 children while sharing a loving life together in Annapolis, MD for 53 years until Bucky passed away in 2010. Kathy & Bucky were long-time active members of St. Mary’s Church in Annapolis, MD. She volunteered at St. Mary’s Elementary School and Georgetown East Elementary School. She was an accomplished cake decorator and baker who won many ribbons at the local Anne Arundel County State Fairs for her baked goods, jellies, jams, and the fresh produce that was grown on the Woelfel farm located on Bestgate Road in Annapolis. You could almost always find Kathy in the kitchen baking up something delicious and her cookie trays were always the highlight of any family gathering. Although her health had deteriorated over the past several years and she was unable to spend as much time in the kitchen as she would have liked, she insisted on making cookies with her grandchildren this past Christmas (2022) and passed out giving plates filled with homemade goodies to friends and family. Kathy was always a giving person with a kind word for everyone. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, shopping, and going out to lunch with friends and family. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kathy lived a full life and quickly became a friend to everyone she met. She always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes. She welcomed everyone into her home, providing many meals and conversation for anyone who stopped by. Kathy will be missed by so many. In addition to her husband, Bucky, and her parents, Kathy was preceded in death by her daughter Wendy Woelfel. Kathy is survived by five children: Nancy Woelfel, Carol (Bobby) Thames, Sandra Woelfel, George (Cheryl) Woelfel, Margaret (Jeff) Miller, 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Sandra Meench Pantall. Family and friends are invited to honor Kathy’s life on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 4-6 p.m. at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomon’s Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. Her burial will be held at 10 a.m. on June 5, 2023, at Saint Mary’s Cemetery on West St. and Spa Rd. in Annapolis, MD followed by a mass at Island Alliance Church, 510 Thompson Creek Rd.
