athryn M. “Kitty” Mabe, 91, a 10-year resident of Bowie, MD, passed away on March 2, 2019 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center following a courageous 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on November 24, 1927 to the late George and Elizabeth Monroe in Fredericksburg, VA where she grew up, raised her family and remained an active member of the community for 81 years before moving to Maryland to be cared for by her son, Jim, and enjoy being surrounded by his family. Kitty attended James Monroe High School. She pursued her love of children, both as a mother of two and as the owner/operator of the former Small Fry Nursery. Kitty enjoyed gardening and playing bridge, and was a member of the Confederate Ridge Garden Club and the local Fredericksburg Bridge Club. She was also a member of the Mary Ball Women’s Club where she was very active in their fundraising, especially for multiple sclerosis, a disease that affected her daughter, Karen. Kitty’s other many interests included puzzles, shopping, crocheting, needle point and knitting. She knitted an afghan for each of her grandchildren when they were born. Kitty was preceded in death by her husbands, John H. Smith and William R. Mabe, her former husband, James Flippo, Sr., her daughter, Karen Lynn Johnson, and three sisters, Bernice Haney, Dorothy Aydlotte and Muriel Gallahan. She is survived by her son, James Flippo, Jr.; a brother, Easom Monroe; a sister, Joyce Bullock; and nine grandchildren, Shannon Mastin, Jason Johnson, Robert and Timothy Paesch, James Flippo III, Joseph Johnson, Jaime Rae Bangson, Jefferson Johnson and Brandi Slabinski. Kitty is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A visitation will be held at the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 308 Hanover Street, Fredericksburg, VA on Friday, March 8 from 1:00 pm until Kitty’s funeral service begins at 2:00 pm. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kathryn M.
