K

atina Karavas, a 12-year resident of Arnold and previously of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2015. Born on February 15, 1915 in Kardamyla, Chios in Greece, Katina celebrated her 100th birthday a month ago. She and her husband were founding members of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh, where she enjoyed volunteering at the Greek festivals, and was a lifelong member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was also a member of Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis. She enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, and supporting and making a comfortable home for her husband and their family. Katina was preceded in death by her husband, Nick, who died in 1992, and 11 of her 12 siblings. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Jack) Collage of Naples, FL and Stephanie (Peter) Petros of Arnold; one brother Spiros Mavris of Chios, Greece; her grandson, Bill Collage and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Julian Collage. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Additional services will be held in Pittsburgh later in the week. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 123 Gilkeson Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15228.
