iyoko T. Waffle, 88, a 35-year resident of Riva, MD and previously of Springfield, VA, passed away on July 29, 2022 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. Known fondly as “Katy” and “Island Girl”, Kiyoko was born on April 10, 1934 to the late Seijin and Gozei Takushi in Gushikawa-son, Okinawa, Japan. She was an avid hummingbird and goldfinch watcher, loved crabbing and was a long-time member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis. Her greatest passion though was being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, Kiyoko was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Katelyn Zinn. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Scott D. Waffle of Riva, MD; her son, Kelly J. Waffle (Susan) of Potomac Falls, VA; her daughter, Lee Ann Evans (Jim) of Clayton, NC; five grandchildren, Kyle and Monica Zinn, Megan Rose (Brian), Emily Waffle (Alex), and Jay Waffle (Nikolle); and 1 great-grandchild, Sam Waffle. Kiyoko is also survived by her sister, Mitsuko Chinen of Okinawa, Japan. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Kiyoko’s life on Friday, August 5 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 6 at 1:00pm at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, 710 Ridgely Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21401. Interment will be private.
