Larry D. Horton - Obituary

arry Douglas Horton, 72, a resident of Lothian, MD and previously of Upper Marlboro, MD, died at his home on May 31, 2024 after a 10 month battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. Born on September 29, 1951 in Bethesda, MD to the late Fred Bascome and Ruth Gloria (nee Brown) Horton, Larry graduated from Crossland High School in 1969, earned an A.A. degree from Prince George’s Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from the University of Maryland, University College. He enjoyed a lengthy career beginning with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center, Systems & Applied Sciences Corp, and finally retiring from GEICO. He was a parishioner at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #9302 at St. Mary’s Church and a food bank volunteer/director. Larry enjoyed participating in church activities, traveling, gardening and lawn care, camping, baseball card collecting, and boating. He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Mary Ann Horton; his children, Megan (Christopher) Gessner of Harwood, MD and Alexandra Horton of Odenton, MD and his siblings, Charles “Tom” (Joy) Horton of Placentia, CA, David (Marie) Horton of Adamstown, MD and Ellen (Blaine) Harris of Allen, TX. Friends are invited to a memorial visitation for Larry at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Monday, June 10 from 6 to 8 pm and at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 14908 Main St., Upper Marlboro, MD on Tuesday, June 11 from 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial is offered at 12 pm.
