arry ‘Skip’ Millard Schultz passed peacefully on December 10th, 2023 surrounded by family. He was 84 years old. Skip was born on June 18th, 1939 to the late Millard and Cora Lee Schultz. He grew up in a farming community in what was then rural Prince George’s County, Maryland. Skip often reminisced about southern Maryland’s unique tobacco culture, how he operated farm equipment at 9 years old, and the happiness he felt on Sam and ‘Nanny’ Naylor’s farm. Skip graduated from Surrattsville and joked that he had at least a dozen cousins in the school (which at that time was elementary through high). He participated in Air Force ROTC, but went on to serve in the U.S. Army reserve (infantry) for 6 years and earned the rank of Corporal. Skip began his professional career in the federal government. He worked his way up from a part-time position, eventually becoming a copyright examiner and supervisor in the Library of Congress. It was at the Library that Skip met Anna, who would be his devoted and loving wife for 51 years. Through her encouragement, he went back to the University of Maryland at night, earning his bachelor’s degree in History at the age of 39 while working full-time and raising a family. He retired from the federal government after 41 years of dedicated service. Not one to ever sit still, he almost immediately went to work for Fairfax County Public Schools. His new workplace was conveniently just a short walk up the hill from where he and Anna lived in Alexandria, VA. He worked there for 20 years. Skip was an avid listener of bluegrass music, and one of the highlights of his life was to see Dr. Ralph Stanley live in concert. He enjoyed traveling to Europe, especially to visit Anna’s family in Poland, on many occasions. Skip was also an avid hiker, reader, and had a passion for history. For 33 years, he was an usher at Christ Episcopal Church in Alexandria, VA. Becoming a lead usher was a point of pride in Skip’s life, where he led a team of distinguished individuals, including military generals and admirals. He is survived by his beloved wife Anna, his sons Christian and Matthew, daughter-in-law Melissa, grandson Dominic, and extended family. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 15th from 10-10:30 AM followed by a service from 10:30-11 AM at Pohick Episcopal Church (9301 Richmond Hwy, Lorton, VA 22079). A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial is intended for family only and will take place at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church (5203 St. Barnabas Road, Temple Hills, MD 20748). In lieu of flowers, you may wish to honor Skip’s memory by donating to Pohick Church in the following ways: Write a check for the ‘Accessibility Ramp Fund’ or go to the Pohick Church website (https://pohick.org/donate) and select the ‘Historic Pohick Church Capital Campaign.’
