Lawrence "Larry" Sturman - Obituary

awrence Allan “Larry” Sturman, 84, a 22 year resident of Churchton, died on December 31, 2023 at South River Healthcare in Edgewater after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Richmond, VA on December 28, 1939, Larry attended classes at the University of Maryland and served his country from 1959 until his honorable discharge in 1965. He was a general contractor by trade, and in his spare time, he enjoyed bowling, fishing and meeting and talking to new people that he met. In addition to his parents, Joseph and Ida Sturman, he was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet Trudo. Larry is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Smith, with whom he had been together for 22 years; his stepchildren, Joseph Mattox, IV of Belmont, CA, Karen and Sheri Mattox of Virginia Beach, VA and Dawn Porterfield of Chesapeake, VA; his sister, Beverly Gordon of Gaithersburg, MD; eight grandsons, three granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Larry’s life on Tuesday, January 16 from 5-8 PM at Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomon’s Island Road, Edgewater. A graveside service, with military honors, will be on Wednesday, January 17 at 1 PM at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Larry’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s Research, at www.alz.org/Maryland.
