Lawrence L. Bozzella - Obituary

L

awrence L Bozzella March 31, 1944 – June 3, 2023 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Lawrence “Larry” Bozzella, who left us on June 3rd, 2023. He was a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His departure has left a void in our hearts, but we find solace in celebrating the extraordinary life he lived. Born on March 31, 1944 to a large family, he was the fifth of six siblings. He was raised in Hyattsville, MD. As a child, his mom always said he was the best baby and easiest to raise. As a young man he was always enthusiastic, driven and wanted to excel at anything he did. He was a great athlete and excelled at wrestling for Northwestern HS. He received a bachelor’s degree from East Stroudsburg College and a master’s degree from George Washington University. Larry possessed a myriad of talents and interests, all of which contributed to his remarkable journey. He was an admired math teacher having taught at several high schools in PG County, MD and retiring from Frederick Douglas. His passion for wrestling took him from athlete to coach (Northwestern HS and Southern HS), referee, tournament coordinator and advocate for the sport. In 1998, he was awarded the “Service to Wrestling Award” by the MPSSAA. In 2003, his dedication to the sport of wrestling earned him a spot in the Maryland State Wrestling Hall of Fame. It was through teaching and coaching that he impacted the lives of many young people, often changing the trajectory of their course. Over the years, Larry remained close friends with many of those he previously mentored. Above all, Larry treasured his relationships with his family and friends. He had four children whom he adored. He loved taking his kids out on the water to fish, crab or just for a cruise. He spoiled them in Ocean City, MD many summers. And, as they became young adults, he supported them as they found their paths in life. In later years, he enjoyed lunches with his siblings, golf with his buddies and time on the sidelines watching his grandkids play various sports. In the midst of grief, we hold dear the cherished memories we shared with Larry. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Larry is survived by his loving children Lawrence M Bozzella, Kristen Dixon (Paul) and Kevin Bozzella (Denise), his grandchildren Brittane, Faith, Sarah and Charlie, his great-grandson Blake, and his siblings Jack Bozzella (Maro), Carol Campbell, Maxine Gatling (Don), Edward Bozzella (Gail) and Jane Grant along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son John Bozzella (Cindy). During this difficult time, let us come together to support one another and celebrate the beautiful life that he led. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by his presence are invited to join us in paying tribute to this extraordinary individual on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 2 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Arundel Rivers Federation, PO Box 760, Edgewater, MD 21037.
