Leonard Phipps - Obituary

eonard “Doc Phipps” Calvert Phipps, 89, a 60-year resident of Edgewater, MD died at his home of natural causes on Friday, December 30, 2011. Born April 22, 1922 in Annapolis, MD to the late Pauline E. and Leonard C. Phipps, Sr., he graduated from Annapolis High School. Leonard served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was employed at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center and worked on submarines around the country. Calvert enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing, farming and watch and clock restoration and repair. He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred E. Phipps on March 22, 2006 and 2 sisters, Mildred Leatherbury and Adeline Suite. Calvert is survived by 3 daughters, Linda Phipps of Edgewater, MD, Sharon Griffin (Gary)of Hudson, FL and Sue Phillips (Jim) of Edgewater, MD; 1 brother, Wilmer Phipps of Florida; 1 sister, Elaine King of Edgewater, MD; 4 grandchildren; Kristen M. Wray of Edgewater, MD, Brian E. Griffin of Tampa, FL, Michelle Griffin of Seattle, WA and Julie Griffin of St. Petersburg, FL; and 1 great-granddaughter, Londyn McMillan. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 4pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Memorial donations may be made in Calvert’s name to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
