eonard Theodore Pimental, 90, of Edgewater, MD passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Len was born in New Bedford, MA, on July 29, 1927, to the late Mary Machado and Joseph Pimental. He graduated from New Bedford High School, joined the Navy and served until the end of WWII. After his discharge, he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Photographic Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology and embarked on a long and distinguished career with the U.S. Government. He began his career as a medical photographer, working with teams of research scientists on neurological diseases at the National Institutes of Health. In 1958, he transferred to the Department of Defense and served in various capacities both in the U.S. and abroad before retiring in 1983. Initially, he worked at the Naval Photographic Center, conducting research on photographic applications for surveillance, and training submarine personnel in the operation of periscope cameras. Subsequently, he became the photographic technologist for the Army Corps of Engineers and later for the Defense Mapping Agency, working on satellite imagery. Len served four years in Germany as the Representative to NATO for Standardization of Mapping and Printing and later became Project Manager of a multilateral venture to design and construct a remote sensing receiving station in Africa. After retiring, he was an active volunteer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, teaching boating safety courses, and with the U.S. Naval Institute, archiving photographs. He is survived by his wife, Carol; four children, Bruce(Evelyn) of Paris, TX, Christopher of Rockville, MD, Tracey (Jay) of Greenville, SC and Peter (Terri) of New Smyrna Beach, FL and five grandchildren. Friends are invited to celebrate Len's life from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, February 23 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 24 at the Annapolis Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Central Ave., Edgewater, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Len Pimental Memorial Fund, in care of Annapolis Evangelical Lutheran Church. Online guestbook available at the link on this page.
