ewis S. Atkins
Lewis “Lew†S. Atkins,98, a 14 year resident of Edgewater, previously of Daytona, Florida, and Washington, DC, died on April 5, 2010 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama of kidney failure.
Born September 12, 1911 in Mineral, Virginia to the late James W. and Henrietta L. Atkins, he graduated from Mineral High School in Mineral, Virginia in 1928.
He worked as a plant operator for the Tubize Corporation in Hopewell, Virginia. Lew also worked as a meat manager for Safeway from 1934-1968, and later as a real estate agent for Prince Georges Properties, Inc. from 1968-1977.
Lew was a member of Davidsonville United Methodist Church in Davidsonville, MD and Riviera Country Cub in Ormond Beach, Florida. He loved to play and watch golf, was an avid Redskins fan and in his younger years loved to play the guitar. He also loved playing cards and dancing with his wife.
Lew is survived by his wife of 76 years, Elizabeth P. Atkins, of Edgewater, MD, whom he married on April 22, 1933, his children, Phyllis Wilson of Montgomery, Alabama, Rudy Atkins, Sr. of Laurel, Delaware and Betty Curro of Edgewater, MD, his brother Melvin Atkins of Hopewell, Virginia. He was predeceased by his daughter Jean Parise, who died in May of 2005, two brothers and three sisters. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren.
Friends may call on Monday from 10am until funeral services begin at 12 noon at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
