Lorraine A. Smith - Obituary

orraine A. Smith of Annapolis, MD passed away peacefully on April 21, 2022. She was born on August 13, 1927 in Media, PA to the late George D. and Hazel I. Price (nee Melrath). An avid aviation enthusiast since childhood Lorraine earned her private pilot license in 1948. She continued to fly while working fulltime as an executive assistant for a defense contractor and taking on the role of wife and mother. An active member of Civil Air Patrol since her youth, most of her years were spent between the Annapolis Squadron at Lee Airport in Edgewater and Maryland Wing Headquarters in Linthicum near BWI airport. During her tenure with the Civil Air Patrol she attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lorraine logged more than 7,000 hours in 18 types of airplanes. Reluctantly, she gave up flying in 1998 at the age of 71. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her other interests included traveling and reading. In addition to her parents, Lorraine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Harold C. Smith and her sisters, Janet Gunn and Kay Price; She is survived by her daughters, Leslie of Annapolis, MD, and Stephanie of Nashville, TN; her grandchildren, Frejus Lee (Mike) Yunker of Southport, NC and Jessica (Phil) Ateto of Annpolis, MD, Jason (Patty) Lastfogel or Riva, MD and James Fentress of Nashville, TN; her great grandsons, Aiden Yunker and Everett Fentress and one great granddaughter, Kaleigh Yunker.
