t. Col. Jack Leland Folkins, USAF(Ret.) Jack Leland Folkins, a resident of Annapolis, MD and previously of Seabrook, MD, died on Thursday November 19 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was 83. Born January 3, 1926 to the late Ralph and Helen Folkins, he joined the Army Air Corps Cadet program after graduating high school for nine months before World War II ended. Jack was a graduate of Boston University with a B.S. in Business and received a Masters Degree in Public Administration from George Washington University. After his graduation from Boston University, he joined the United States Air Force as an officer and completed flight training. He served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Later in his career he served as an exchange officer in flight instruction with the Royal Australian Air Force and flew as a member of the Royal Australian Air Force Acrobatic team the “Red Sales”. He lived for 2 ½ years with his family at East Sale, Victoria, Australia. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked as an administrator in various areas of the Prince George's County Government. Jack was a “Barbershopper” with memberships in SPEBSQA, the “Marylandaires” Chorus and quartets. He was a member of the Chrysler Arbitration Board and served on Congressman Steny Hoyer's Naval Academy Selection Team. Jack also volunteered with the USO Literacy Council of America and Hospice of Prince George's County. He also enjoyed bird carving and was an avid Redskins fan, attending every home game for 35 years. He is survived by his wife Margaret Folkins of Annapolis, his children, Scott Folkins of Prince Fredrick, MD, Bruce Folkins of Columbia, MD and Karen Smith of Dunkirk, MD; his sister Martha Hawes of Ponte Vedra, Florida. Also survived by his grandchildren; Maura and Kurt Folkins and Caitlin and Kirsten Smith. Friends are invited to celebrate Jack's life on Saturday, November 28, 2009 from 2-4pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A memorial mass will be held on December 12, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Concord, Massachusetts with inurnment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to SPCA of Anne Arundel County,P.O. Box 3471, Annapolis ,MD 21403 , Riva Volunteer Fire Dept. P.O.
