Lucy Spagnolo - Obituary

t is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Lucy A. Spagnolo, RN, on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 after a long battle with dementia. She was born on March 15, 1933 in Hendersonville, PA to the late Clarence B. Weyandt and Helen M. McIntyre. After graduating high school in 1951, she graduated from Canonsburg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 and became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in 1957. She married Samuel V. Spagnolo, MD in 1961. She continued to work as a nurse until the late 1960s, by which time she was a full-time homemaker and mother to three sons. In 1972, the family moved to Bethesda, MD where she lived for nearly 50 years. As her children grew up, Lucy returned to school and earned a BA in Education from George Washington University in 1986. During the early 1980s, Lucy joined the Montgomery Hospice Society where she spent 30+ years dedicated to providing skilled care and loving comfort to not only many county residents suffering from terminal illness, but to their families as well. Lucy was a talented cook, baker, and quilter/seamstress. She was also an active member of Toastmasters International for many years. She took great pride and joy in being a part of her grandchildren’s lives. Above all, Lucy was a loving and devoted mother. All of us who knew and loved Lucy, as well as the countless others whose lives she touched, will be forever grateful for a life that provided so much to so many. Lucy was preceded in death by her brother Glenn and sisters, Mary Jane, Helen, Catherine, and Lucinda. She is survived by her sons and their spouses, Sam (Beverly) Spagnolo, Brad (Aimee) Spagnolo and Gregg (Sandy) Spagnolo and her grandchildren, Kyra, Samuel, Avery and Anthony. A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Montgomery Hospice Society, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850, re: Lucy A.
