Lula Hughes - Obituary

ula Corrine Hughes, of Annapolis, MD, died on October 20, 2015 at Fairfield Nursing Center in Crownsville, MD. She was 92. Known as Corrine to family and friends, she was born on August 11, 1923 in Dublin, VA to the late Lee Howard Spencer and Josie Blanche Owen. Corrine was a longtime member of Weems Creek Baptist Church and sang in their choir. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, playing Uno and Skip-Bo and being surrounded by family and friends. Corrine will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Hughes in 1998; a son, John Hughes; five siblings, Everett, Lee and Robert Spencer, Lila Lowman and Maggie Ellison. Corrine is survived by a daughter, Wanda Melton of Harwood, MD; a brother, Jack Spencer of Edgewater, MD; two grandchildren, Shawn Hughes of Chicago, IL and Karen Love of Prosper, TX; and six great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Monday, October 26 from 4 to 7pm. A funeral service will be held at Weems Creek Baptist Church, 600 N. Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD on Tuesday, October 27 at 11am. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery.
