Marguerite Owens - Obituary

M

arguerite M. Owens, better known as Peggy, died on Wednesday, August 25th due to internal complications at her home in Naples, Florida. Mrs. Owens was born January 4, 1923 and was the daughter of Nancy Hooper and Robert Martin. She was raised in Royal Oak, MD and later grew up in Roland Park. She attended the Roland Park Elementary School and Eastern High School for Girls. In 1941 she worked for the US Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and later became the assistant to General Doll in the G2 section of Office of Strategic Services. In 1946 she married John B. Owens, one of the founders of the Owens Yacht Company, and together they built a new home in the Lake Roland area and raised their 6 children. She was active in the Children’s Aid Society, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Friends of the American Wing and the Gibson Island Garden Club. She and her husband were also members of the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron and spent many hours racing sailboats on the Chesapeake Bay. They continue to maintain a summer home at Gibson Island. In 1973 they retired to Pt. Clear, Alabama and bought a 400 acre farm. Peggy became an avid golf and tennis player and enjoyed playing bridge. In 1985 they moved to Naples, Florida, and she became an active member of the Moorings Country Club, the Naples Museum of Art and the Pelican Bay Foundation. Mrs. Owens is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years and 6 children: Christine Sands of Paia, HI, Peter Owens of Durango CO, David Owens of Ruxton, MD, Amelia Sullivan of Pacifica, CA, Elizabeth Crossman of Key West, FL and Andy Owens of Orlando, FL. She also has 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Her only sister, Mrs. Selby Coale, passed away in 2008. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 10th at 11:00am at St. James' Church, 5757 Solomons Island Rd., Lothian, MD 20711. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James’ Church.
