O

n Saturday, April 30th Martin Henderson passed away at Georgetown University Hospital with his wife, MaryAnn, by his side. He was born on December 3rd, 1934 in Boston, MA of parents Martin A.K. Henderson & Lilly Katheryn Mortonson. He is preceded in death by his sisters Edith Skoglund and Cora Wilder. He is survived by his wife MaryAnn Ulander Henderson and his two sons Mark Andrew and wife Tamara; Paul Bengt and wife Janinne and his grandchildren Brooke, Morgan and Brady. Upon graduation from Tufts University in 1960, Marty worked over 50 years for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, MD. During the mid-sixties and early seventies Marty served as Project Manager and Chief Engineer for the successful development of long range ammunition for Naval major caliber guns. Mr. Henderson established and managed the Research and Early Development branch for the joint service CAD center. Marty headed this group until his retirement in early 2000. He and his team are responsible for numerous innovations in the area of Aircrew Emergency Escape. Upon his retirement Marty worked with Applied Ordnance Technology and continued his work with SAIC as a consultant to the Navy until his death. Marty was especially known for his engineering expertise in the areas of Tomahawk CAD/PAD energetic devices and energetic materials. Marty loved to sail, fish and play board games. He was an avid reader, enjoyed watching his sons compete in sports and loved playing gin rummy with his wife every night. Marty was actively involved in numerous volunteering endeavors, but was most proud of his commendation as a long-time volunteer for USA Swimming. Along with his love for the Washington Redskins, he was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox! All of his friends will agree that he had an addictive smile and an amazingly positive view on life. Relatives and friends are invited to Mr. Henderson's Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD 20745 on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Services will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 11:00 am at Grace Lutheran Church, 10928 Indian Head Hwy., Ft. Washington, MD 20744. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
