Mary Lee Hughes - Obituary

S

unrise: June 25, 1958 – Sunset: October 21, 2025 Mary Lee Hughes of Fort Washington peacefully entered eternal rest on October 21, 2025 at the age of 67. She was lovingly welcomed into Heaven by her parents, brother, sister and nephew who awaited her at Heaven’s gate. Mary was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, godmother and friend whose warmth, and love for others touched everyone around her. Though she never married or had children of her own, her heart overflowed with love for her family and friends. She was the proud Godmother to Jessica, Ricky and Charlie and the very best “Aunt Mary” to her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great- great nieces and nephews. Nothing brought her more joy than when a new baby joined the family, she celebrated each one as a precious gift. Mary was a lifelong sports fan who cheered passionately for her favorite teams: Washington Commanders, Nationals, Capitals and the Maryland Terps. Through her fan club pages and sports communities, she made countless friends who became extended family. We have been so blessed to hear about the lives she touched through those communities; she was not just a sports fan, she was a light in their lives. Her energy, spirit, and love for the game connected her to so many but it was her heart for the people that shined. She will be deeply missed. Mary is survived by her sweet Yorkie Bella, who will continue to be spoiled in North Carolina with family. Mary’s laughter, loyalty and love for her family and friends will live on in the many lives she touched. Her legacy is one of joy, compassion and connection. The family would like to give a special thank you to Sharon Simpson for being such a wonderful friend/sister to Mary, for being her voice, and for holding her hand as Jesus walked her home. Your care, compassion and kindness mean more than words can ever express, and you will always be a special part of our family. Mary’s internment will be private. A plan for a National’s game in 2026 is in the works for all that can attend to remember Mary. Followed by a trip to Hovermale’s Ice cream for Mary’s favorite. Family is God’s greatest blessing; may we cherish one another always.
