Mary G. Seaton - Obituary

M

ary G. Seaton, 94, a 45 year resident of Edgewater, MD and formerly of Washington, D. C. widow of Samuel Milton Seaton, died Monday, November 18, 2019, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born July 18, 1925, in Washington, D.C. Following graduation from McKinley High School. She attended night and weekend classes at National University and George Washington University. She began working in 1942 as a clerk-typist in the Lands Division of the Department of Justice, advancing to a quasi-legal clerk, receiving a special commendation from the Attorney General of the United States for work performed in the acquisition of the site for the FBI Building. In 1968, she was appointed as senior secretary/asst. to the Hon. Burnita Shelton Matthews, the first woman appointed as a Federal District Court Judge by President Harry S. Truman in 1949, a position she held until the Judge's death. Her interests were varied. While working full-time, she graduated from St. Paul Institute receiving certification as a practical nurse. For several years, she held licenses in Maryland and Washington, D.C. as a real estate agent and was a correspondent for The Evening Capital covering South County news. Thereafter, for over 20 years, she was involved in church drama in Edgewater Baptist Church and Riverdale Baptist Church in Largo, MD. Following retirement from federal service, she served as a volunteer at Anne Arundel County Fair and on the Advisory Council of South County Senior Center, and the Area Council of the Department of Aging and Disabilities in Annapolis, MD. She received Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior as a teenager and has served by faith church service and related programs. Her testimony: "God is so good. He is my constant companion. I count it a joy in serving and working with people, made in His image, as we are the pinnacle of His creation. In my life's journey, God has enabled me, by His grace through faith, in my Savior Jesus Christ. My prayer is that you will accept Him as I have." Surviving are one son, Samuel Joseph Seaton of Churchton, MD; two brothers, Ralph Giove of Ocean City, MD and Joseph Giove of Gaithersburg, MD; three sisters: Anna Ricucci of Silver Spring, MD, and Rose Durbin and Frances Miller, both of Westminster, MD; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
