Mary L. Simms - Obituary

M

ary Louise (Fowler) Simms, age 92, of Prince George’s County, MD, died January 14, 2022, at University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, Largo, MD. She was born January 27, 1929, in Prince George’s County, MD, where she lived her entire life, to the late Helen Evans Fowler and James Edward Fowler. Mary was the loving wife of the late William Joseph Simms, her husband of 64 years. She always said her greatest joy in life was her children and was an incredibly involved, devoted and energetic mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mary is survived by her daughter, Sharon Ann Atkins and husband, Thomas Lyman Atkins; two granddaughters, Tracey Loucette Atkins Ulterino and husband, Matthew James Ulterino and Colette Louise Atkins Reagan and husband, Brian Christopher Reagan; three great grandchildren, Sawyer Atkins Reagan, Amelia Clare Reagan and William Nicholas Ulterino. Mary spent her career working for the U.S. Federal Government, first at the Department of Agriculture and then at The National Weather Service. She and her husband, William built their home and created a lifetime of memories in Brock Hall Estates, Upper Marlboro, MD. She was an avid doll collector and enjoyed many hobbies including baking, gardening, genealogy and time spent with her dogs. She said one key to longevity is to never find everything you are looking for. Mary was a patriotic American who loved the State of Maryland and was proud of her early American ancestry. She was the youngest of eight children and shared the closeness of her extended family. In addition to her children, Mary is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was loved, and all who knew her will miss her devotion, strength and family stories. A small service is planned for the Spring at the historic St. James Episcopal Parish, Lothian, MD.
