M

attie Louise Adkins, 92, a resident of Arnold, MD died on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Chesapeake Hospice House in Pasadena, MD. Born on April 19, 1924 in Richlands, VA, Mattie was raised in the Holston Home for Children orphanage in Greeneville, TN. She was the vice president of her sophomore class at Greeneville High School in Tennessee before moving to Charleston, WV where she graduated from Charleston Catholic High School. During World War II, Mattie worked for the Federal government, specializing in Army Intelligence . During the 1950s and early 1960s, she worked as a pharmacist's assistant/clerk at Hooks Drugstore in Peru, IN. While living in Indiana, she roller skated in dance competitions, winning many medals and trophies. From 1965 until her retirement at the age of 80, Mattie worked for Drug Fair drugstores in Annapolis, Pasadena and Severna Park. Mattie’s life was guided by her deep faith in the Lord and was a long-time parishioner of New Hope Chapel in Arnold. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and music. Most of all, Mattie cherished her role as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; she loved getting her family together. Mattie had many friends and family who loved her very much. She had a comedic sense of humor and always had a smile and a hug to offer. Mattie was preceded in death in 1990 by her loving husband of 45 years, Charles V. Adkins. She is survived by her children, Terry (Sharon) Adkins of Sterling, VA, Sue (Paul) Centurelli and Kerry Ann (Chuck) Baldwin both of Arnold; five grandchildren, Jodi (Brian), Ashley (Michael), Tiffani (Jason), Mark (Lindsey) and Dustin (Melissa); and eight great-grandchildren, Morgan, Molly, Marlo, Reid, Emily, Brendan, Lily and William. Friends are invited to celebrate Mattie’s life from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where her funeral service will be held on Friday, May 6 at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be private.
