elvyn "Mel" David Blume, 72, a resident of Edgewater for 18 years and formerly of Potomac, died of cancer Sept. 22 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a six-week illness. The son of Celia Blume of Silver Spring and the late Louis Blume, Mr. Blume was born June 7, 1935, in Washington, D.C., and served in the Washington, D.C., National Guard. He worked in the printing industry as a graphic designer for 45 years. He also worked at the Pentagon for two years in city planning and most recently for Comanco as a property manager. For six years he was president of the River Oaks Homeowners Association and for eight years was president of the Annapolis Landing Homeowners Association. He also served on the board and was past president of the South River Federation and on the board for First Night Annapolis. He was a member of many other boating and aviation associations. His interests included creating stained glass works of art, boating and aviation. In addition to his 100-year-old mother, surviving are his wife, Pauline Blume, whom he married Aug. 18, 1966; three sons, Paul Blume of District Heights, Alan Blume of Bethesda and Charles Blume of Silver Spring; and five grandchildren. He was the father of Michael Blume, who died in 2005. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Burial is private.
