M

elvin Ceasar Mack, Sr., 61, of Washington, DC and previously of Alexandria, VA and Colorado Springs, CO, died July 17 following a heart attack. Born on August 22, 1951 in Washington, DC, Melvin attended Central High School in Capitol Heights, MD and received his GED in 1970. He later attended Pikes Peak Community College where he studied Autobody Repair and Refinishing. From 1970 to 1984, Melvin served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant with assignments at bases in Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, South Korea and Germany. He received the Army Service, National Defense, Armed Forces Expeditionary and Good Conduct Medals and the Oversees Service Ribbon. From 1984 to 1992, Melvin lived in Colorado Springs where he worked as a custodian and floor technician/janitor. In 1995, he moved to Virginia and worked as a gardener at Fort Belvoir until 2003. Melvin was an expert card player and enjoyed playing sports, especially bowling and volleyball. His favorite sports team was the Washington Redskins. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Vincent and Evelyn Elizabeth Gray Mack, one brother, Charles Mack, one sister, Diane Walton and his grandparents, Clarence and Mary Gray. He is survived by two sons, Melvin C. Mack, Jr. and Alexander Mack both of Colorado Springs, CO; two daughters, Diana S. Oliver of Colorado Springs and Christine K. Brouch of Bowie, MD; five brothers, Vincent (Judy) Gray and Sylvester L. (Marie) Lindsay of Washington, DC, Clarence Mack of Laurel, MD, Stanley Mack of Landover, MD and Emmanuel (Shirley) Mack of Waldorf; two sisters, Rebecca Yvonne Neville of Silver Spring, MD and Jeanette A. (Sherman) Brown of Hyattsville, MD; and four grandchildren, Jaeden J. and Kiersten A. Oliver, Melvin C. Mack III and Alana M. King-Mack all of Colorado Springs. Friends are invited to Melvin’s Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Friday, July 27 from 12 noon until his funeral service begins at 1 p.m. Interment Ft. Logan Cemetery in Denver CO at a later date.
