ercedes Valderrama Layne, 86, of Edgewater, peacefully passed away on Sunday November 9, 2025 at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, MD.
Mercedes was a devoted and loving wife to her late husband Clarence J. Layne of 59 years and a mother to her children Nancy Layne and Sandra Layne of Edgewater, MD. She is also survived by her grandson Phillip Arce-Layne of Edgewater, MD, her niece Monica Campos (Francisco) and nephew Andres Yabiku of Reading, PA.
Born Elsa de las Mercedes Valderrama Serrano on March 11, 1939 in Chépica, Chile. Mercedes was better known as “Mommy” who gave from her heart, whose warmth, and love for others touched everyone around her. She always had a smile on her face, opened her home, had a place at dinner table for you and treated you as one of her own.
Mercedes was a nanny for a U.S. Ambassador in Guatemala before coming to the United States on December 25, 1960. She worked as a Seamstress at Saks Fifth Avenue in Washington D.C and later made a career as a Caregiver. In 1972 Mercedes received her U.S. Citizenship and was proud to be an American. She was devoted in her faith and continually giving of herself.
She was the eldest of six siblings. Preceded in death her sister Antoñia del Carmen Yabiku and brother Pedro Segundo Valderrama Serrano. She is survived by her sisters Blanca Rosa (Castro) Valderrama Serrano, Gabriela del Carmen (Muñoz) Valderrama Serrano and her brother Exequiel del Carmen Valderrama Serrano. She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews in Chile.
