Merry Scalone - Obituary

erry Susan Howard Scalone passed away June 8, 2013 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Susan was born August 24, 1950, in Bethesda. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Hazel and Gene Howard and brother, Bill. She is survived by her devoted husband of almost 40 years, Tony; their two sons, Gabe of Van Nuys, CA and Joseph (Kassy) of Edgewater; two siblings: Janet Howard (Joanna Matthews) of Silver Spring, and Jon Howard of Hedgesville, WV; in-laws: Maggie (Jim) Berry of Davidsonville and Scott (Allex) Kitterman of Ellicot City; nearly lifelong best friend, Jenny (Mark) Sussman, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Susan grew up in Rockville and graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1968. She attended Montgomery College and worked as a secretary in the U.S. Senate Office Building before marrying Tony in 1973. Susan took on many roles in her life: devoted mom, cub- scout leader, Avon representative, florist, and secretary for Tony’s company. She enjoyed visiting her condo in Ocean City, MD. However, her greatest passion was cooking and entertaining family and friends in her home, a place where everyone knew they were welcome and you would never leave hungry, thanks to her great food. Friends may visit at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater on Friday, June 14 from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. until Susan’s celebration of life begins at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at the Unity by the Bay Church, 836 Ritchie Hwy., Severna Park, MD at 12:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Susan’s name to the House of Ruth (houseofruth.org) or the Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary (wildlifesanctuary.us).
