Mettie Maryland Smith - Obituary

M

ettie Maryland “Tootsie” Smith Henry, 66 of Annapolis, MD passed away after a valiant battle with Cancer on Tuesday July 21, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family. One year has gone by and we have emerged from the COVID pandemic, so it is time for family friends and co-workers to celebrate who Mettie was and the life she lived. Mettie was born October 27, 1953 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Velpoe and Elizabeth Smith. She graduated from Annapolis High School, Birmingham-Southern College, and Wake Forest University School of Law. A long-time Annapolis attorney, Mettie was in private practice for 23 years with her late husband, Darrell L. Henry; represented Anne Arundel County for 14 years; and, in her last few years, proudly practiced law with her son, Benjamin Henry. Mettie was a person dedicated to taking care of family and there are many that were lucky enough to call her family. She is survived by children, Renee Henry-Montgomery, Cheryl Henry-Fawcett, Theodore Henry, Benjamin Henry and his fiancée Emily Gannon; her grandchildren, Sophie, Maxwell and Ethan; her brothers, Andrew Smith, John Smith and the late Bryant Smith. She is also survived by nieces, Amanda, Jessica, Adrianne, Penny; her nephews, Matthew and Paul; their spouses; and 14 great nieces and nephews. Mettie was also the aunt of the late Jennifer Smith Tickle. Mettie found joy in simpler, family-oriented settings in her spare time, such as watching her son play baseball, sitting along Town Creek in the western Maryland mountains, relaxing on the beach of Hatteras, North Carolina, and hosting the Christmas Eve extended family social. She also enjoyed art, crossword puzzles, and her pets. She found community being an active member of St. Andrews Methodist Church, as well as the Annapolis Elks Lodge #622. Having lived in Annapolis most of her life, there are many people from many circles who had a chance to know Mettie. Her children invite family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances to come celebrate her life at the Eastport Democratic Club on Saturday, July 24, from 2 pm - 5pm. Come on by for a bit as we share some memories, laughs, light fare and a few drinks. Dress and atmosphere will be very casual so come as you are. For those who would like to experience the thrill of public speaking in order to tell a funny story or share a special moment with others, we will open the floor at the top of the 3 and 4 o’clock hours to those who want to step up to the mic. As with the public speaking, an RSVP is by no means required, but appreciated. If it is likely you will be attending, or would just like to send the family a note, please email a note to Ted@TJHProperties.com. Cheers! Condolences and tributes may be left by using the tab on this page.
