Michael Halkos - Obituary

ichael Halkos, age 92, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life marked by family, faith, community, and a deep pride in his Greek heritage. Born into a large Greek family in Hopewell, Virginia, Michael graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Political Science. After graduating, he moved to Maryland, where he built a successful career as a restaurateur and entrepreneur. Over the years, Michael owned and operated three restaurants and became a respected member of the business community. Michael believed strongly in giving back to the community. In his younger years, his commitment to service earned him Kiwanian of the Year, an honor accompanied by a proclamation from Prince George’s County. He took great pride in serving others and being an active and contributing member of his community. His Greek Orthodox faith was an important part of Michael’s life. He loved his church and devoted many years to serving his parish. He sang in the church choir and served as parish treasurer, always taking great pride in supporting his church and its community. Michael was equally proud of his Greek roots, with his family tracing its heritage to Chania, Crete. He was a member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), an organization whose values of family, education, community, and Hellenic heritage were close to his heart. While Michael accomplished much throughout his life, his greatest joy was his family. He was a loving father and took immense pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He treasured the time he spent with them, whether attending their musical performances and sporting events, taking them to the movies, or simply enjoying their company. Those moments created memories that his family will cherish for years to come. Michael will be remembered as a proud Greek American, a devoted Orthodox Christian, a successful businessman, a generous member of his community, and, above all, a loving family man. His faith, heritage, service to others, and love for his family were the cornerstones of a life well lived. Mike leaves behind his wife, Tanya Beck; children Tim Halkos (Cheryl Gohr) and Jennifer Halkos Washington; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He also leaves brother Alexander Halkos, sister Mary Halkos Liviakis, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Leon Halkos and Demetrius Mazacoufa. He leaves behind a legacy of love, family, faith, and service that will continue through the generations. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Friends are invited to celebrate Michael’s life on Monday, August 24 from 6 to 8 pm at Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD.
