ichael J. Picciano, age 86, a retired naval architect with the Department of the Navy, died on Wednesday, September 14 at the Spa Creek Center in Annapolis, MD. Born in Hazleton, PA, Michael was an honorably discharged disabled veteran of World War II. Serving in the U.S. Army, he was stationed on Okinawa where he participated in the Ryukyus campaign for which he received a Bronze Battle Star. After the war he attended Catholic University on the GI Bill. In his retirement, Michael’s interests included politics, history, bridge, music and his family. He also enjoyed traveling, especially by train, in the United States where he visited National Parks and other historic monuments.
Michael is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Margaret Picciano; a son, Mitch (Karen Sandberg) Picciano of Oakton, VA; two daughters, Nina (Ray) Benton of Washington, D.C. and Anne (Daniel) O’Neill of Bel Air, MD; three grandchildren, Alex Picciano of Arlington, VA, Linnea Picciano of Oakton, VA and Caroline O’Neill of Washington, D.C.
