assed on peacefully in her home on May 28, at the age of 96. Born Mildred Elmore in Greensboro, North Carolina on January 22nd, 1915, she moved to Washington DC in 1918. She married her beloved husband Carlton E. Pyles in 1934, and lived in Temple Hills, MD for over 70 years. While in Temple Hills, she and Carlton were very active in St. Barnabas Church, Carlton as a vestryman for more than 25 years and Mildred having served every position in the Women’s Church Auxiliary. She was secretary of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington DC under Bishop Angus Dunn, and held offices in the Maryland Federated Garden Club, Maryland Homemakers Club, Alpha Club, Eastern Star and PTA. She was also involved in various philanthropic organizations and served as Area Chairman for the Community Chest (later known as the United Way). She moved to McLean, Virginia in 1991 and was an active member of the Great Falls Women’s Club‘s Bridge, Book and Garden Groups, St. Thomas Episcopal Church parish and in various activities at The Jefferson in Arlington, VA, where she resided. Mrs. Pyles is survived by her three children; Norris Carlton Pyles, of Bradenton, FL, Janice Pyles Lucca, of Great Falls, VA and David Lynn Pyles of Easton MD, adoring grandchildren, Alan Pyles, Steven Pyles, Robert Lucca, Elizabeth Lucca Gallagher, Tracey Pyles and Todd Pyles, 15 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in passing by husband Carlton E. Pyles, who died at age 59 and her two daughters, Marilyn and Martha Lee, who succumbed to Cystic Fibrosis at 16 and 4, respectively. A funeral service and interment will be held for family and friends on Thursday, June 2 at 11am at St. Barnabas Church, 5203 St. Barnabas Rd., Temple Hills, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Please sign the guestbook.
