yrtle E. Berglund, 102, a 17-year resident of Arnold and previously of Bridgeport, CT, died February 25 at the Genesis Spa Creek Center in Annapolis. Born on November 23, 1910 in Bridgeport, CT, to John L. and E. W. Axelina Berglund. She graduated in 1925 from Black Rock School in Bridgeport. Myrtle worked as a secretary at the Heppenstall Steel Company in Bridgeport, CT for 38 years and then worked for Crowley Fuel until she retired in 1976. She was a member of the Baptist Temple in Bridgeport, currently known as Trinity Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served on the Mission’s Commission and Library Committee. She was also a board member of Elim Park Place in Cheshire, CT for many years. Most recently, Myrtle has attended New Hope Chapel in Arnold where she participated in Missions Committee and card ministry. She also participated in Bible Study Fellowship classes and was active at the Arnold Senior Center. Myrtle enjoyed knitting, ceramics and quilting, and corresponding with family and friends remembering birthdays and special occasions. In 2010, she was recognized in the Capital in celebration of her centennial birthday. The Today Show picked up and aired a segment from WBAL’s interview of Myrtle regarding her academic achievement as a 100-year old student taking AACC classes at the Arnold Senior Center. Myrtle was preceded in death by her brothers, Lawrence J.N. Berglund and David C.J. Berglund, two sisters, Ethel S. Berglund and Violet C. Johanson and nephew, Larry Berglund. She is survived by nephew, Paul Johanson; four nieces, Christine Thomas, Carolyn Johanson, Diane Berglund-Dobry, and Barbara Markham, nine grand-nephews and nieces, six great-grand-nephews and nieces, and by a host of people that were endeared by her. A memorial service will be held for Myrtle at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at New Hope Chapel, 804 Windsor Road, Arnold, MD 21012. Interment at Mount Grove Cemetery in Brigeport at a later date.
